The London-born, Ghana-raised Ras began his journey in the music industry as a club DJ, playing a blend of hip hop, R&B and reggae in the early 1990s. His next move was to promote big London club nights, bringing over talent from the US whilst also promoting local talent. Promoting these nights saw DJ Ras Kwame take to the turntables for a range of artists including Gang Starr, Public Enemy, Wu Tang Clan and the Fugees.

Ras Kwame went on to found West London Sugar Shack record shop in 1993, and went on to form Baby Shack Recordings from 1994-2000. As a garage producer, Choice FM DJ Ras Kwame was responsible for some massive garage anthems, such as ‘Over Here’ featuring Ritchie Dan, ‘Bump and Grind’ featuring Lady Saw and the underground smash ‘Body Killin’ by The Vincent Alvis Project.

Ras Kwame joined BBC Radio 1Xtra at its launch in 2002 with the 100% Homegrown show every Sunday evening. The show is dedicated to the sound of UK black music and has provided a live platform for talent and given major support to new acts like Lethal B, Estelle and Emeli Sande. Ras Kwame’s talents for presenting were awarded when he won Best Radio DJ at the Urban Music Awards and started a new music show called Showtime with Ras Kwame on Channel U.

In February 2005, DJ Ras Kwame was brought into BBC Radio 1 to host one of the three OneMusic shows that succeeded the John Peel slot.
